What is a Life Coach, Really?
We have health coaches, business coaches, but what is a life coach? If you ask my dad he would give you some sports analogy and then laugh. When you think about, if you need a coach to help you with your sport, why not with your life? We live in a world of over stimulation, overwhelm and a ton of information being blasted at us on a consistent basis. Why not have someone help guide you through it all?
One of the reasons Life Coaching is so misunderstood is because too many people try to stuff outside-the-box thinkers into well-defined boxes. Back in the mid-nineties the Life Coaching was just taking off and Newsweek magazine ran an article about this exciting new profession calling it “Part consultant, part motivational speaker, part therapist and part rent-a-friend, coaches work with managers, entrepreneurs, and just plain folks, helping them define and achieve their goals — career, personal, or most often, both.”
What is a Life Coach?
Now, don’t get me wrong, some of this is true. I do work with a wide variety of clients from all walks of life to help them achieve their personal and career goals. But it’s pretty clear this writer hadn’t quite wrapped his head around the incredible power of Life Coaching. I mean, “part rent-a-friend”? It’s no wonder people still have questions, even those who feel a powerful pull toward working with a Life Coach.
To begin, it’s really important that you understand that a Life Coach is not a therapist. People suffering from depression or mental illness should seek out a therapist who specializes in these areas. Life Coaches specialize in working with people looking to take their lives to the next level. The key difference: Coaches are more concerned with your future results while therapists are interested in unresolved issues from your past. However, Life Coaches will help you overcome your mental blocks and align you with your true-self and envisioned future.
It is also misleading to call Life Coaches “part motivational speaker.” Many motivational speakers get on stage and present an hour-long speech about what worked for them. Your Life Coaching sessions will be about what is going to work for you in your life at this moment. If you have ever been very inspired by an energetic speaker only to be disappointed later when your motivation faded away don’t blame yourself.
How a Life Coach Can Help You
Life Coaches understand that the reason motivation quickly fades away quickly after a motivational speaker is that these solutions were never your solutions, to begin with. Life Coaches also work with you on a consistent basis to maintain your motivation and keep your integrity intact.
For these same reasons the consultant label doesn’t work either. Life Coaching is about continually empowering you. I believe that only you have the answers that will make your life fulfilling and help you thrive in your career or business. Even if those answers currently seem to be cloudy or hidden inside.
As you can see Life Coaching is really a unique profession which is why it can produce such incredible results—even if you’ve tried other things in the past. Together, we’ll examine what’s going on right now in your life, discover obstacles standing in your way, and choose a new course of action that will help you live a life you love.
